The 2021 suite of International Building Codes is expected to be adopted by Chaffee County and the Town to go into effect at the start of 2024. This includes the State-mandated new model energy code. Please be aware before submitting building permits. Any application that Buena Vista receives after December 8th will likely need to follow this new suite of codes. Applications must be complete and thorough to meet this deadline. Buena Vista will work diligently to process these permits prior to the end of 2023.
The Planning & Zoning Department serves Buena Vista with information regarding land use, zoning, residential and commercial building permits, and more as we guide community members and businesses through various rules and regulations to achieve their visions.
The department provides assistance in many areas such as:
- Zoning regulations and land use questions
- All development permits for land uses and new construction in addition to remodels, additions, decks, fences, sheds, and accessory structures
- Long-range planning and community development projects
- Subdivision of unplatted land or replats of existing subdivided property
- Annexation requests
Be sure to contact the Town Clerk and Planning Department before starting a business. Most businesses require a business license, sign permit approval, and possibly change of use approval prior to opening and installing signs.
Any new construction, demolitions, or structural, electrical, mechanical, or plumbing changes (whether interior or exterior) to existing buildings within Town limits also require consultation with the Planning Department. This includes installation of fences or sheds, as well as roof removal or repair.
